One could barely tell that Mathis was paying attention to her surroundings. Her dreamy purple eyes were about an inch from her sketchbook, her long blue-gray hair fanned out around her and on the table under her lopsided maroon hat. Both of her hands were hidden beneath her curls, one holding her little book, while the other one moved in a scratching rythm that almost seemed to keep time with the voices all around her. Her feet, as well, in their back and forth back and forth kicking motion, kept time on the legs of the chair.
She was, though, in fact, listening to all of those silly mages try and come up with a spell that might make her a mermaid again. She came here for that, every year, and every year they failed to find a way to undo what they'd done to her.
Yes, Mathis Bluetrace was once a merperson. But no longer. Some silly but powerful mage had turned her human. Not that she'd minded. After all, she couldn't have discovered her talent for art otherwise. Paper and charcoal didn't come in a large supply under the ocean waves, for which there was a good reason. She shook her head, curls rustling over the table she was bent over.
She had made her decision. She wasn't going to come back here for this next year. "Excuse me?" Mathis asked audibly, and all heads turned towards the small figure of the mermaid turned human. "I'd like to stay this way, if you please. It's boring down there. I want to be a land-person."
They all looked shocked. Her staying a land dweller? They hadn't thought it would come to that!
"Now, nothing you can say is goin to change my mind. I'm staying and that's final." She looked at them as sternly as someone that small for their age could look with her lopsided hat and her hand still on her sketchbook, legs kicking beneath her.
